If you’re looking for somewhere different to eat this weekend, Olathe has several fun choices — including a brand-new pizza shop, Brazilian treats, Nepalese dumplings and some great downtown options.
One of the newest places to try is Pizza Tascio – Olathe at 1485 E. 151st St. The New York-style pizza shop just opened in south Olathe, and this is an especially easy one to sample without committing to an entire pizza. Pizza Tascio’s menu lists a cheese slice at $4.50 and other regular slices at $5, with a two-big-slices-and-a-drink combo for $10. And these aren’t little slices — they’re the big, thin, foldable New York-style kind that can make a pretty substantial lunch. Early Olathe customers have been particularly complimentary about the sauce, crisp crust and pizza served hot from the oven.
Downtown, Third Street Social at 135 S. Kansas Ave. is another relatively new Olathe option. The restaurant serves elevated American comfort food, and its weekend brunch makes it especially worth considering Saturday or Sunday. Choices include chicken and waffles, biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits and hot chicken Benedict.
Just down the street, Pizza 51 South, at 200 S. Kansas Ave., offers a completely different pizza experience inside a converted 1950s Phillips 66 service station. You can order by the slice, but groups can go all-in with one of its enormous 26-inch pizzas. The old gas-station setting and patio make this one as much about the experience as the food.
For something completely different,
Geo’s Bakery & Market at 12209 S. Strang Line Road is part Brazilian bakery, café and market. Try Brazilian cheese bread, coxinhas filled with seasoned chicken, pastéis or brigadeiros. It’s a good choice if you’d rather sample several things you’ve probably never had before than order a traditional restaurant meal.
Yuva Eats, near 119th Street and Black Bob Road, is another chance to try something outside the ordinary. Its Indian and Nepalese menu includes momos — Nepalese dumplings available in several varieties — along with curries, naan, biryani and Kathmandu-style noodles.
And seafood fans can try Mariscos KC, at 519 E. Santa Fe St., for Mexican-style seafood including ceviche, aguachile and seafood boils. It’s colorful, casual and a good choice when you’re looking for something a little more adventurous than burgers and fries.
But if you want to try one of Olathe’s newest restaurants for just five bucks or so, Pizza Tascio may be the easiest weekend experiment of the bunch: walk in, grab one of those oversized slices and see what you think.
