A new nonprofit in Olathe is trying to make getting help feel less like receiving charity and more like going shopping. Community Threads KC, located at 420 S. Kansas Ave., provides new and gently used clothing at no cost in a boutique-style setting designed to give families privacy, choice and a more dignified experience.
The organization recently marked its opening with an Olathe Chamber of Commerce ribbon cutting and community open house on Aug. 25. Community Threads KC was founded by Executive Director Shelley White, who said the goal is not simply to hand out clothes, but to help people leave feeling confident and respected.
Inside, clients can browse racks of clothing, use fitting rooms and receive help from volunteers finding items that fit. There are no price tags and no appointment is required. The nonprofit serves adults and school-age children and says people facing job loss, housing problems, domestic violence, financial hardship or other difficult circumstances are welcome.
The clothing available includes everyday wear, children’s clothing and professional workwear for job interviews and employment. Community Threads also operates seasonal programs for back-to-school clothing and winter coats and can provide emergency clothing assistance for people going through a crisis.
The nonprofit relies heavily on community donations. It accepts clean, gently used clothing for adults and children, accessories such as purses and belts, professional clothing and new underwear in all sizes. Financial donations and volunteers also help keep the program operating.
Community Threads KC is currently open Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., along with the second Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The organization says clients may shop for themselves and their children, with quantity limits depending on available inventory.
For families who may need clothing — or Olathe residents looking for a meaningful place to donate items they no longer use —
Community Threads offers a new local option where the emphasis is as much on dignity and choice as it is on clothing.
