The iconic toy retailer is preparing to open a stand-alone store next week, bringing Geoffrey the Giraffe and a familiar shopping experience back just in time for the holiday season.
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Toys “R” Us is making a comeback at Oak Park Mall, with a new stand-alone store expected to open next week.
Olathe Today contacted Oak Park Mall on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and confirmed that the retailer plans to open its doors next week. An exact opening date has not yet been announced.
The store will be located on the mall’s lower level near JCPenney, offering shoppers a dedicated Toys “R” Us location separate from the smaller toy departments found inside select Macy’s stores.
Oak Park Mall recently announced the upcoming opening on social media, welcoming the return of the well-known toy retailer and its longtime mascot, Geoffrey the Giraffe.
A FAMILIAR NAME MAKES A COMEBACK
For generations of Kansas City-area families, Toys “R” Us was a favorite destination for birthday presents, Christmas shopping and the excitement of browsing aisles filled with toys.
The retailer operated large stores across the country before its U.S. business filed for bankruptcy protection in 2017 and closed its remaining domestic stores in 2018.
Since then, the Toys “R” Us brand has been rebuilding its retail presence through partnerships with Macy’s, smaller-format locations and new stand-alone stores.
The Oak Park Mall location is part of that national expansion.
The brand already operates toy departments inside Macy’s at Oak Park Mall and Town Center Plaza in Leawood. Another Toys “R” Us location opened at Tanger Kansas City Legends in October 2025.
The new store will provide a dedicated shopping space for the brand at one of Johnson County’s largest retail destinations.
OPENING AHEAD OF THE HOLIDAY SHOPPING SEASON
The timing places the anticipated opening ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, when toy retailers traditionally experience some of their strongest sales.
According to Oak Park Mall’s store directory, the new Toys “R” Us location will have the following hours:
Monday through Saturday: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Details about the store’s merchandise selection, size and any planned grand-opening activities have not yet been released.
Oak Park Mall is located at 11149 W. 95th St. in Overland Park.
The addition of Toys “R” Us brings another recognizable national retailer to the mall as businesses prepare for the holiday shopping season.
Olathe Today will provide the official opening date when it is confirmed.
