OLATHE, Kan. — There’s something about flipping through a stack of records, looking at the album covers and wondering what you might discover next. At The Rock Shop Music & Art in Olathe, that experience is alive and well.
Located at 1837 S. Ridgeview Road, near 151st Street, the locally owned record store opened in September 2025. Owner Ron Fields spent years collecting music and selling records at regional shows before deciding to open a storefront of his own.
His passion for vinyl began when he was young, inspired by his father’s record collection. What started as a personal interest eventually grew into a business built around sharing that love of music with others.
Inside the shop, customers can browse new and used vinyl records, CDs, cassettes and music-related artwork. The selection covers a wide range of musical styles, including classic rock, country, hip-hop and heavy metal.
Unlike shopping online, where customers generally know exactly what they’re searching for, visiting a record store can be as much about discovering something unexpected as finding a particular album.
Fields buys record collections from customers, including people who are downsizing or parting with music they’ve collected over the years. That means the inventory changes regularly, giving customers a reason to return and see what’s new.
But there’s more to The Rock Shop than the music on its shelves. Fields enjoys talking with customers about their favorite artists, learning their musical tastes and helping them find albums they’ve been searching for.
The store offers a place for longtime collectors to share their enthusiasm and for a new generation of music fans to discover the appeal of owning physical recordings.
